I.4.25 Pompeii. Found 1869. Room 35, east wall of exedra. Wall painting of Iphigenia in Tauris with Thoas, Orestes and Pylades.
According to Helbig, Thoas sits on the right on a stone seat covered with a leopard skin.
Behind him, is a guard wearing a Phrygian cap and bearing a shield in his left hand.
Orestes wearing a red cloak looks melancholy.
Pylades, wearing a yellow and light purple cloak, looks livelier, a mixture of fear and defiance.
A second guard, with face covered and holding two spears, stands behind the prisoners.
At the rear is a staircase that leads to a temple platform on which Iphigenia moves slowly towards the stairs.
The top of the picture is destroyed but it is likely she is looking towards the visitors.
She is probably carrying the Tauran Artemis idol on her left shoulder.
Now in Naples Archaeological Museum. Inventory number 9111.

I.4.25 Pompeii. Room 35, exedra. Perhaps 1854. Drawing by Nicola La Volpe of wall painting from east wall.
