According to Jashemski – The north (Upper) peristyle garden, which belonged originally to a house whose entrance was on the Via dell’Abbondanza, was reached by a flight of steps from the central (Middle) peristyle which lies on a level about two metres below. This (Upper) garden was surrounded by a portico on the south, east and most of the north sides. There was a travertine puteal between the two middle columns on the east side. On the west, a large exedra (room 57), preceded by a vestibule, had a splendid view of the garden, as did the triclinium (room 58) on the east. The columns, like those in the central peristyle, were made of brick and Sarno limestone and faced with stucco. The columns, with the exception of those opposite the entrances of the large exedra, the triclinium, and to the atrium on the north, were left unfluted. According to Jashemski –

The north (Upper) peristyle garden, which belonged originally to a house whose entrance was on the Via dell’Abbondanza, was reached by a flight of steps from the central (Middle) peristyle which lies on a level about two metres below.
