According to Jashemski –
“The centre garden, (the Middle Peristyle), was surrounded by a portico supported by seventeen columns made of brick and Sarno limestone and faced with stucco. The upper parts were fluted, the bottoms left plain and painted red. There was a gutter around the edge of the garden.
At the west end of the garden was a semi-circular basin around which were arranged six spectacular bronze animals found in 1861. …………………………
In February 1926, when restoring the garden in this peristyle, Maiuri discovered a large rectangular pool (3.50m wide x 10.80m long x 1.40m deep). On the west side two high steps (0.45m and 0.40m) led down to the pool. The rough foundations of the much smaller semi-circular pool had been built on these steps and on the bottom of the large pool. The large pool had then been filled with old building material and soil. This was probably at the time that the house with the entrance on the Via dell’Abbondanza was joined to this house, probably after the earthquake. The cistern opening in the south-west corner of the garden had a lava puteal; the one in the east portico, no puteal.”
