According to Jashemski –

“The long wall separating the centre (Middle) peristyle from the south (Lower) peristyle has six windows and two doors which afforded a magnificent view into the southern peristyle. The six windows each corresponded to an intercolumniation in the southern peristyle, which would indicate that in the earlier period this peristyle had been considered the more important. The twenty columns of the portico were made of brick and Sarno limestone and faced with stucco. The upper parts were fluted, the lower parts were left plain. A marble puteal stood in the portico near the north-east corner column. A gutter outlined the edges of the garden.”
