Passageway P1, leading
to services area from south-east corner of portico. Looking
south.

I.10.4 Pompeii. May 2010. P1,
east wall, with ancient hole made by fugitives trying to escape in 79AD.
According to Allison,
the 10 skeletons discovered in this corridor might have been part of the same
party as the 3 skeletons found with a pick and a hoe in room 19 on the other
side of the hole.
They appear to have
been people who probably suffocated whilst trying to escape during the final
eruption.
They included at least
3 children under the age of 5.
The age of the
children and the victims being on both sides of the wall and with tools would
suggest they were probably victims rather than post-eruption intruders.
