The name of Menander was inscribed by the painter on the skirt of the man’s cloak. (CIL IV 7350a)

According to Varone this used to read, in small black letters, the words

 

Menander

Hic primu[m] om[niu]m como

ediam scripsit

qu[i] E[rat] anno

ru[m] XIV  

Lib[ri] IIII

 

According to Varone, this refers to the fact that Menander wrote his first comedy at the age of 14. Four books.

 

Della Corte read XIX instead of XIV, see CIL IV 7350b.

According to Cooley this translated to “Menander. He was the first of all to write comedy………four books”.
