According to Gell, this is a view of the cavaedium of the house, s. w. of the basilica.

This and the adjoining house were excavated by the French General Championnet.
The entrance is to the left in the view. The floors are paved with mosaic.
See Gell, W. Pompeiana 3rd Ed., 1852, p. 138, Plate XXXIX.

This wall originally would have been painted with a red zoccolo/dado which was painted in square panels with birds and plants, separated by compartments which were placed under those above which contained candelabra in the middle zone of the wall but now lacking all colour, these separated the yellow panels with spaces that were decorated.
According to Pagano and Prisciandaro -
“On the long side of the atrium itself, where there was the ala, there were also two rooms, one that had a mosaic floor - black with white circles woven onto a black-background, and red zoccolo/dado, the walls mostly painted with grotesques, and in the spaces that these left between them, alternatively placed were some animated, and some views; in one of which there is the fall of Icarus, and in the other Ulysses tied to the ship's mast, to escape the flattery of the Sirens. The upper part of the plaster of this room was adorned with various paintings on a white background; there was also a few portions of the stucco cornice.”

VIII.2.1 Pompeii. May 2018. Looking towards east wall of triclinium. Photo courtesy of Buzz Ferebee.

On the long side of the atrium itself, where there was the ala, there were also two rooms, one that had a mosaic floor - black with white circles woven onto a black-background, and red zoccolo/dado, the walls mostly painted with grotesques, and in the spaces that these left between them, alternatively placed were some painted animals, and some views; in one of which there was the fall of Icarus, and in the other Ulysses tied to the ship's mast, to escape the flattery of the Sirens. The upper part of the plaster of this room was adorned with various paintings on a white background; there was also a few portions of the stucco cornice.”

The zoccolo/dado that appears totally colourless today was originally probably black.

The middle zone of the wall would have been painted with yellow panels edged with “carpet” borders and separated by narrow compartments.

The upper zone was painted white with slender architectures

According to La Vega –
