VII.4.48 Pompeii. Pre-1842, drawing by Zahn of east wall of tablinum.
Zahn describes: Wall from the Casa della Caccia (Dedalo e Pasifae) at Pompeii, excavated in 1834.
The main painting on this wall gives us a representation which rarely occurs on ancient monuments.
Theseus, son of Aegeus and Aethra, at the entrance to the labyrinth of Crete, receiving from the Ariadne, the daughter of Minos and Pasiphae, the ball with whose thread he saves himself from the labyrinth after killing the Minotaur. By this deed Theseus freed Athens from the terrible tribute, consisting of seven boys and seven girls. Theseus escaped with Ariadne, but left her on Naxos, where Bacchus, coming from India on his journey, married her.
The counterpart of this painting on the opposite wall of the tablinum represents: Daedalus, who brings to Pasiphae the wooden cow he made, through whose mediation with the bull she gave birth to the Minotaur.
