“Instead of portraying Bacchus just discovering Ariadne, the situation here has already developed. He is drunk and making a pass at her. She is standing wide awake, looks a little surprised by the encounter with a tipsy looking stranger, and makes efforts to protect her modesty. The horizontal line is very high.”

Scholars now debate whether the woman is his first wife Roxanne or his second wife Stateira.
