HGW04a Pompeii. Herculaneum Gate West Side. Tomb of Gens Istacidia.

The tomb has a circular aedicula reconstructed on top of the high podium.

There is an enclosure at the front (behind HGW04) with the tomb at the rear.

 

HGW04a Pompeii. 1836 plan by De Jorio. According to De Jorio the top of the monument was entirely ruined. On it were found pieces of columns which held up a circular cornice. There were 6 statues, three of men, each in a toga and three of women, each wearing a pallium (Greek cloak). In the centre rose a square structure that would hold the main urn. There were 11 niches in the tomb. Eleven cippi were found outside at c, d and f. See De Jorio, A., 1836. Guida di Pompei.  Napoli: Fibreno. (pl. II).

According to De Jorio the top of the monument was entirely ruined.

La Vega describes finding three paintings of a tiger on a blue background, two hanging cockerels and a mask. He also describes a piece of decorated clay with an inscription.
