North-east corner of
atrium, with altar and doorway to room 3.

VI.15.5 Pompeii. March
2009. Room 1, atrium.
Altar on east wall of the atrium composed of three arched
niches, all of different sizes, and all three painted in red on the inside.
In front of the niches are two brick altars, with the
remains of painted plaster.
According to Boyce, in the east wall of the atrium to the
right of the entrance is a small recess done in the period of the First Style.
It was evidently converted into a domestic sacellum at
some later time.
The back wall of the recess contains a large rectangular
niche.
This extends across almost its entire breadth, bordered by
two pilasters.
Later, it may have been in the time of the Second, or as
late as the Fourth Style, three small irregular arched niches were cut, none of
the same size.
On the floor between them were set two masonry altars.
The interior walls of the niches were coated with red, the altars with yellow
stucco in imitation of marble.
There is still another niche of irregular shape in the
wall above the First Style cornice of the original niche.
