VI.8.23 Pompeii. May 2017. Looking north across impluvium in atrium. Photo courtesy of Buzz Ferebee. The floor of the atrium was made from a fine lavapesta (crushed lava) with regular rows of white tesserae. The edge of the impluvium was missing.
On the west side (left of photo) two channels were carved into the floor, and although they have now been infilled and made level with the flooring, they can just be seen. These would have been used for the drain pipes leading from the garden to the mouth of the cistern and were originally crudely dug into the flooring.

The floor of the atrium was made from a fine lavapesto (crushed lava) with regular rows of white tesserae.

The edge of the impluvium was missing.

On the west side (left of photo) two channels were carved into the floor, and although they have now been infilled and made level with the flooring, they can just be seen.

These would have been used for the drain pipes leading from the garden to the mouth of the cistern and were originally crudely dug into the flooring.

VI.8.23 Pompeii. Two medallions of heads of Maenads from walls of tablinum incorporated into one painting by Giuseppe Marsigli.
The Maenad on the left is described by Helbig (457), and the one on the right (Helbig 458).

According to RMB –
“Two cupids, one in the act of milking a goat, while the other with a stick in one hand and a basket in the other, seems to have reaped the fruits of the effort of the first.”
