Ambiente A13. Ala on south side of atrium A12 with Orion mosaic

V.2.Pompeii. Casa di Orione. March 2019.
Room A13, the south ala, on right with white walls showing Orion mosaic floor, the room was open onto the atrium.
Photograph © Parco Archeologico di Pompei.
At the time of the eruption this was a room filled with cupboards, and would have been used like the nearby room, as a storeroom.
The observation of the dynamics of entry of the pumice-stone, together with the finding of glass vases and ceramics buried inside the lapilli, at a height much higher than the floor, allow us to identify the presence of wooden furniture occupying the space (which at the beginning of the eruption had prevented the lapilli from filling the room completely).
Also on the ground, near the two walls facing east and west there was a rich quantity of pots from table and storeroom, evidently accumulated here, due to the work in progress elsewhere.

V.2.15 Pompeii. October 2018. Room A13 on south side of atrium. An exceptional mosaic floor with a mythological or astrological theme was found.
According to the Massimo Osanna this may depict the catasterism of Orion.
The snake represents the Earth. The goddess Gaia had been angered by the giant and hunter Orion announcing that he will hunt every animal on earth.
She sent a scorpion to kill him. The scorpion rose from the Earth and fatally stung Orion.
Zeus turns both of them into stars in the heavens. The wings on Orion represent his transformation.
A pagan winged creature carries a torch to set Orion aflame, whilst pointing to the heavens and a second creature offers Orion a crown.
According to Greek mythology Orion is the brightest constellation.

Ambiente A15. Room with two doorways on north side of atrium A12

V.2.Pompeii. Casa di Orione. June 2018. Looking north across atrium.
Room A15 is a narrow room with two entrances either side of the coloured blockwork.
Photograph © Parco Archeologico di Pompei.
The first doorway, on the right, would have been for a stairway, of which the first two masonry steps were conserved, leading by further wooden stairs (not preserved) to the rooms on the upper floor.
The second doorway, on the left, would have given access into an under-stairs room with the usual use of a storeroom.
Originally, in the north wall of this under-stairs room, would have opened a doorway giving access to the area at 14b, but which was then bricked up by the proprietor.

V.2.Pompeii. Casa di Orione. May 2018. Room A17 on the south side during excavation.
Photograph © Parco Archeologico di Pompei.
This room was the kitchen, a “service room” recognised by its simple decoration and the presence on the floor
of various artefacts from table and pantry (cooking pots and tablewares) and amphorae, as well as from the finding near to the east wall of a square structure that defined a masonry hearth. There at the time of excavation, the ash of the last baking/cooking was still preserved, covered by the upper portion of an amphora which was to serve as a lid. Presumably, the last cooked meal, and perhaps never eaten, by the owner of the house.
See Osanna M, 2019. Pompei. Il tempo ritrovato. Le Nuove Scoperte. Milano: Rizzoli, (p.99).
