“On the east side of the peristyle, that is facing towards the entrance, is situated an exedra between two cubicula, preceded by a small vestibule.

In this peristyle, at the height of the floor above, the most important epigraphic discovery of its time, took place between the 3rd and 5th July 1875, the finding of the wax tablets”.

from the middle of the rear wall, height 0.43, length 0.42; Mars and Venus (with two Cupids but no dog) –

Description of Mars, with helmet and Venus, then ………

“Behind the described group you can see a large quadrangular base – on the right stands a Cupid, the right leg crossed above the left, the right elbow resting on the shield of Mars, while the same hand holds the spear, the right hand on his hip. Another Cupid stands in the foreground on the left of Venus, presenting her with an open box.”

There was another painting of Mars and Venus, from the Fourth room on the north side of the peristyle.

According to Sogliano –

“This painting showed Mars and Venus sitting next to each other.

Venus on the left, raises her right arm above her head so that her hand is almost above her left shoulder, and holds a kind of green ribbon between her fingers. Of Mars only the head seen with a helmet was preserved, and the right hand that passing behind the back of Aphrodite was in the act of removing the peacock robe from the parts still covered of the goddess.

The same description by Mau of the painting of Mars and Venus “in the cubiculum whose doorway was the 4th on the north side of the peristyle”, but no mention of a painting of Narcissus in this room.
