According to Boyce
the niche was coated with white stucco and in its floor were three holes for
statuettes.
It used to have
several iron nails driven into the wall beside the niche at the level of its
floor.
Perhaps this was to
hold in place an ornamental cornice of wood, as suggested by Mau.
