II.7.9a Pompeii. Palaestra or Palestra.

Excavated 1814 to 1816, 1933 and 1935 to 1939.

 

(Originally when excavated, this was numbered as Reg. II, Insula 10).

According to CTP –
This was the door leading to the rooms for the doorkeeper/porter (ostiarius) and although originally was not numbered, now known as II.7.9a.
In the recent past, the Vicolo between II.7 and II.8 had been blocked up at the northern extremity.
The south side of the Vicolo was closed by a wall before reaching doorway at II.7.10.
At least 10 bombs fell inside and outside the Palestra during September 1943, but luckily damage was slight.
