Jashemski Excavations in Garden, 1972

According to Wilhelmina, the two houses fronting on the north side of the insula and the large rear split-level market garden orchard at their rear formed a common property.

A ramp along each of the long walls (west and east) leading to the lower level followed the natural slope of the streets outside.

A prominent feature was a huge hole in the north-west corner of the lower area.

The hole was an ancient one, the lapilli which had filled it had been removed by the original excavators.

When the heavy growth had been cleaned from the hole, it was noticed that the hole had a yellow colour, which it was thought may have been potter’s clay, but of a quality that would have required much work to refine it. It may have been the source of the clay used at the nearby lamp and dice box factory.

Work was started in the lower garden near the east wall, and immediately root cavities were found.

When the work was extended towards the centre of the garden, no more were found, but the soil had been badly damaged by the passage of trucks.

After this the narrow ramp along the east wall was tried where there had been no trucks, and beautifully preserved root cavities were found.

In the lower garden two vegetable gardens were discovered.

The garden to the north had nine distinct plots separated by furrows, for the use of the gardener and for irrigation: the one in the south-west part had five distinct plots, also separated by furrows.

The garden plots, which contained small trees, were easily recognisable as they were exactly like modern garden plots in Pompeii.

A vineyard took up a large part of the lower garden. The vines were small, not over two years old, exactly four and a half Roman feet apart, and not old enough to be staked.

Tree root cavities of varying sizes were found throughout the garden, except in two places. These were probably both fruit and nut trees.

Very few tree roots were found in the south-east part of the lower garden where the soil had been badly damaged by the trucks, and at one place in the upper garden.

At first this area, filled with a large amount of lapilli, was difficult to understand. When the lapilli was removed, the arched masonry vault of the Sarno Canal was reached.

Among the important discoveries in this garden were the 28 terracotta pots found embedded in the soil at varying depths, at intervals along the 4 walls.

Considerable carbonized plant material was found.

Carbonized fruit and vegetables had previously been found in shops and in homes at both Pompeii and Herculaneum, but it was unusual to find carbonized fruits, nuts and vegetables preserved in a garden.

In this garden, pieces of hazelnut shells, a piece of carbonized fig, carbonized almond, many carbonized grapes, carbonized grape seeds and carbonised broad beans had all been identified.

Every piece of carbonized wood was also carefully retrieved for possible identification.

Later these proved to include filbert, plane tree and oak.  The oak charcoal may have come from a stake or a tool.

29 bones and 20 teeth were found in the garden (Jashemski: Gardens, I: 242 and n. 46-50 on p.357) but there was no way of knowing how many bones were removed when most of the lapilli was trucked away when the site was originally excavated.

Wilhelmina conjectured, that the many amphorae found here, could have been used to package the produce raised and sold from here.

She wondered whether the proprietor was exporting and perhaps importing food in his merchant ship?

The excavation of this garden gave a picture of an ancient market-garden orchard, the first one ever to be found.

According to Wilhelmina, “Twenty-nine bones and twenty teeth, representing five animal species were found during the excavation of this garden. These were identified as being from dog, pig, cow, sheep, sheep or goat, chicken and some too fragmentary to identify”.

According to Wilhelmina,
“….Among the important discoveries in this garden were the 28 terracotta pots found embedded in the soil at varying depths, at intervals along the 4 walls. With the exception of six half-pots, these were similar to the two that had been previously found. 8 of the pots were only slightly below the surface of the ground. 14 were found at the bottom of root cavities ranging in depth from 7 to 42 cm. A cluster of 6 appeared to be half pots. The pots, with one exception, have one hole in the bottom and 3 on the sides. All of these pots (13 of which were sufficiently complete to be restored) are of a coarse clay and vary in colour from red to black”.
